DETAILS REVEALED FOR FIRST NVIDIA QUAKE III ARENA CHAMPIONSHIP AT QUAKECON
Maps, Prizes Unveiled for Ultimate QUAKE III ArenaTM Tourney
MESQUITE, Texas - July 3, 2001 - Let the practice begin! id SoftwareTM and the
QuakeConTM organization have announced the details for the first
NVIDIA® QUAKE III ARENA Championships at Quakecon, a $50,000 tournament
that will name the only QUAKE III Arena champion crowned by id Software.
QuakeCon is the definitive fan-based video game tournament, convention and party. This year's event is slated for
]Thur.-Sun., Aug. 9-12, in Mesquite, Texas.
The championship, which will kickoff Thur., Aug. 9 at 1 p.m., features:

Tournament maps include Pro_q3tourney2, Pro_q3tourney4, and Pro_q3dm6 from the new QUAKE III Arena
"Pro Map Pack" released by id Software in the latest point release (1.29f) available at www.quake3arena.com,
as well as ztn3tourney1, an independent map by Sten "ZTN" Uusvali, available at

A $30,000 grand prize, with $10,000 for second and $5,000 for third place finishers as well as QuakeCon
trophies for the top five finishers and prizes from various event sponsors.*

Tournament machines will be armed with AMD AthlonTM 1.2 GHz processors and
NVIDIA's leading edge GeForceŽ3 video cards. In addition, all of the tournament and BYOC servers will be
AMD AthlonTM MP-powered systems.
QuakeCon 2001 will be the largest gathering of Quake fans in the event's six year history. More than 3,000
gamers are expected to make the journey to Texas from across the US, Europe, Australia and around the world.
Participants will battle 24-hours-a-day in the 1,250 person, bring-your-own-computer (BYOC) LAN-area as well
as learn about game development and technology from industry icons in four days of workshops and discussions.
QuakeCon began in 1996 as a LAN party dedicated to fans of id Software's games and has grown to include
QUAKE®, QUAKE IITM,
QUAKE III Arena and QUAKE III: Team ArenaTM. It was
created by gamers to join with online friends in real life, meet the makers of the games they crave, talk shop
with industry veterans and compete with some of the best players in the world. The event enjoys continued success,
growing from a small gathering of 150 players in 1996 to 3,000 in 2000.
